Rising Damp

Rising damp is caused when surrounding clays and soils are absorbed into the masonry components of a building’s structure by capillary action. In other words, rising damp is the technical term to describe the movement of moisture from the ground into the walls. Similarly the movement of moisture to a sponge soaking up water.

Overall, the level to which the damp rises is determined by the effectiveness of any original damp proof course. Equally, the volume of the water supply, evaporative conditions over the wall surface, and humidity.

The term rising damp is generally used when dampness appears above the floor or skirting board level of the property. Subsequently, this causes damage to brickwork, mortar joints, plaster and paintwork or wall coverings. However in most cases this is attributed to the lack of or failure of the building’s damp-proof course.

Remove internal plaster to correct height (minimum 1m).
Inject chemical damp proof course using only BBA approved products.

Replaster.

I have recently used TTDP for the second time and can highly recommend them. The first occasion, in August 2022, was to remedy poor quality work carried out by a builder - their quality andeffectiveness was first class and solved all of the problems.
